Home Money Saving Tips

Now that the warmer weather is just about here, these home money saving tips can help stretch your monthly buget.

If you set your A/C thermostat a little higher during summer months, you'll reduce your cooling costs 3-4% for each degree of adjustment. Changing the temperature from 74°F to 77°F could lower your energy bill by more than 10%.

A whole house fan is a simple and inexpensive method of cooling a house, particularly during times when the humidity levels are not too high.

If you buy a new air conditioner, buy an efficient model that is sized and installed properly.

New air conditioners must have a minimum SEER rating of 13. Be aware of how the SEER rating can affect your energy use.

A properly ventilated home can significantly improve overall comfort levels and also reduce energy costs.

Use kitchen, bath, and other ventilating fans wisely. In just 1 hour, these fans can pull out a houseful of warmed or cooled air. Turn fans off as soon as they have done the job.

Insulate and seal all attic access openings properly.

Caulk and weather-strip doors and windows that leak air. You will be surprised about the amount of energy lost through the cracks and openings in a home.

Crawl spaces can be a significant source of energy loss during both summer and winter, and should be properly insulated.

One of the most cost-effective ways to reduce your energy costs is to reduce the air leakage within your home as much as possible.

When properly selected and installed, windows can help minimize a home's heating, cooling, and lighting costs.

Ways To Cut Back On Expenses

It seems more and more people are finding themselves on a tighter budget now a days. Living paycheck to paycheck, with most of their money paying for basics like food, gas and housing.

I believe I have mentioned these saving tips before, but I think it is a perfect time to mention them again. I’m sure if you truly analyzed your monthly spending, you would be able to find ways to cut back and save some money each month.

Some people on budgets fail to recognize what they really need vs. what they want. There is that possibility of saving money if you look at your spending habits and only make purchases on what you need.

If you feel comfortable raising your Homeowners and Auto Insurance deductibles, this could save you additional money. I know most insurance companies gives you a credit if you have multiple policies with them. You could also shop quotes for both insurances. You may be able to find lower insurance than what you already have for an additional savings.

I have made it a point to reduce food waste in my home. I began noticing the amount of food that was being thrown out and it really upset me. The leftovers that usually found their way to the back of the refrig which were forgotten, are now being used for additional meals. I have been doing this for awhile now and I honestly can say I save money each week this way. I also bring lunch to work. The savings by just doing that are alot each week.

You may be able to trim expenses by looking at your cable and cell phone bills. Do you really need those extra cable channels? How about that expensive cell phone plan that includes services you hardly use? If you are in a situation that you are having trouble meeting your more important bills, should you really be paying for those HBO channels? If you have both a land line phone and a cell phone, it may make more sense to delete one of those services. There would be a definite savings there each month.

Another way to cut back on expenses is by paying attention to the sales being offered. Clothing, for example, can take a chunk out of your monthly paycheck. Maybe shopping at a store which is less expensive...meaning you are not paying a higher price because of the 'name' of the store.

If you truly look at where your money is going and make a commitment to trim expenses, you can find ways to cut back and save each month.

Money Saving Tips

These days it is important to spend less on things when you can. I think most people are feeling the pinch. Here are a few ways to save some money each money. It does add up.

1. Still Using a Land line?

If you have a cell phone, you probably don't need to keep that land line. A land line is expensive. If you must have a land line, think about switching to your local cable company. They offer bundle packages and/or promotions that will surely be less expensive.
I am one of those people that cannot give up my land line due to business reasons, but I am saving over $100 by switching to my cable company. Their promotion is valid for 2 years. I am saving quite a bit of money each month this way

2. Do you use the ATM frequently?

If you don't like to carry cash around like me, you may use an ATM that is close to you at the moment. Some ATM's charge up to $3.50 in fees just to take your money out. Use the ATM a few times and those fees add up. Instead, try to use the bank your associated with. No fees are charged.
What I have been doing lately is if I am at the food store or other store that allows you to receive cash back, I take money then. I am not charged any additional fees.

3. Still Buying Name Brands?

I know most people are in the habit of buying name brands and are hesitant to purchase store brand products. Have you ever compared labels? I have and realized the same ingredients are usually in both. I now buy store brands and save money each week. No one in my household even notices the difference. In fact, I like the store brand products more.

4. Eat Out Less

If you are on the go and eat dinner out often, try cutting that in half. If you order lunch out while at work, do the same. Considering lunches end up being about $10 each day by the time you add the tax and tip. That's $50 each week! $200 each month! Even by cutting it in half and bringing lunch from home, you can save $100 each month. And, healthier eating too.

5. Can't Give up your Pedicures or Manicures?

The shop I visit charge $25 for a pedicure and I give at least a $5 tip. I'll be honest, a pedicure is the most relaxing experience...right girls? Since summer's over, I'll get one last pedicure to last the winter. I usually bring a polish from home, so if needed, I can touch up when needed.

During the summer I cut my pedicures down to once a month. I saved $90 each month by doing this.
I do my own manicures, so I didn't have that expense to worry about. But, if you need to get manicures, try going a week or two without. These actions add up in savings each month.

6. Rent Movies?

If you've already given up on going out to the movies and paying those ridicules fees, but now rent movies, you can still save. The local food stores here in my NJ area offer machines that allow you to rent a movie for $1.00! that's right one dollar. Have you noticed if your food stores offer the same?

You can also get yourself a library card at your local library. They are free and usually libraries have an awesome video/audio department. Instead of paying those high cost rental fees, FREE is great.

7. Still Have a Gym Membership?

If you do and pay monthly fees, do you really go to the gym as much as you should? If you don't, that is wasted money. I recently read that gym members visit their gym once a week...four times a month. Does that justify you paying those monthly fees? There are many ways you can stay active at home that will cost you zero.
I love pilates and it cost me $10 to buy a CD. I use that often and incorporate a cardio workout by walking on a treadmill or using my tae bo CD. The savings here are incredible and honestly, I get a better workout and the time spent is focused on my routine, not on my surroundings, nor am I socializing with other gym members, or waiting to use machines etc...

Fighting High Fuel Prices

According to PSE&G at My Energy Tips, here are some tips to fight the high prices we are expected to pay for gas.

Gasoline prices are expected to reach record highs this summer. While your wallet is bound to take a hit, you need not just sit idly by while your gas tank guzzles up more and more of your money. There are steps you can take to help improve your vehicle's fuel economy and save money, while still being able to visit family, take that vacation and do all of the other things you plan to do this summer.

Drive Sensibly
Driving recklessly (speeding, rapid acceleration) can waste a lot of energy. By using careful driving techniques, you not only improve auto safety, you can vastly improve your fuel economy.
Drive the speed limit. In many vehicles, gas mileage decreases rapidly after 60 mph. By staying under 65 mph, you can improve your fuel economy up to 23%, depending on your vehicle and conditions.

Remove excess weight. Avoid leaving unnecessary items in your vehicle, especially heavy ones. For every 100 pounds of excess weight, your car can lose up to 2 mpg.

Other sensible tips include:
Avoid excess idling, use cruise control to maintain a constant speed, and use overdrive to slow down your engine speed.

Keep You Car In Shape
Proper maintenance will have a positive impact not only on the value and longevity of your car, but on its fuel economy as well. Have your vehicle tuned on a regular basis. Fixing a vehicle that is out of tune can save up to 4% on fuel economy. Check and replace air filters regularly. Replacing a clogged air filter can improve your fuel economy by as much as 10%. Often overlooked is tire inflation. You can improve your mpg by more than 3% or 10 cents a gallon by keeping your tires inflated at the recommended level.

Planning Trips
Try to plan your weekly errands into as few trips as possible. One long trip will gain you much better fuel economy than several short trips with a cold start. If possible, schedule your work hours to avoid peak rush hour traffic. You will spend less time sitting in traffic and using up fuel. Take advantage of any carpooling or rideshare programs that are available. When taking longer trips, it is tempting to load down your vehicle using a roof rack or carrier. However, these devices mess with the aerodynamics of your vehicle and can cut your fuel economy by up to 5%, If possible, lighten your load and stuff everything into the trunk of your vehicle.

Purchase a More Efficient Vehicle
Thinking about buying a new car? Now would be a perfect time to find a more fuel-efficient vehicle! A great place to start is the U.S. EPA’s Fuel Economy Guide 2008. This provides information on gas mileage and more on hundreds of models from 1985 through 2008.

Tips to Conserve Water & Improve Your Lawn

The following tips from My Energy Tips and PSE&G will help you to conserve water while improving the quality of your lawn.

Lawn and landscape watering creates a surge in water demand during the summer months. For most homeowners, a green healthy lawn is a top priority. Many amateur landscapers end up over-watering their lawn, causing more harm than if they did not water it at all. By following some simple steps however, you can conserve a lot of water while still having that green lawn that you have always dreamed of.

Ø Fertilize properly. A good fertilization system provides the proper nutrients that enable your grass to build a deep root system that can better access water within the soil.

Ø Irrigate your lawn deeply (down to 4-6 inches) instead of every day. A well-irrigated lawn does not need to be watered more than once a week.

Ø If you use an automatic sprinkler system, install a rain shut-off device to avoid unnecessary watering.

Ø Use a rain gauge to measure how much rain or watering that your lawn receives. A lawn typically needs only 1-1½ inches of water per week.

Ø Schedule your watering cycles to reduce runoff and increase absorption. Try and water only as rapidly as the soil can absorb the moisture.

Ø Water early in the morning. Wind and temperatures are generally the lowest of the day, thus allowing water to be applied evenly and with little loss from evaporation.

Ø Adjust your lawnmower to a higher setting. Higher grass holds moisture better than a closely clipped lawn.

Ø Aerate your lawn. Punch holes in your lawn about six inches apart to allow water to reach to the root system instead of running off. Inexpensive manual or powered aerators are available at your local DIY retailer.

Coupons DO Save You Money

I've become an avid online shopper. I haven't gone into the malls in a long time.

It all started back in November when I came across Black-Friday.net, which offers you access to all the coupons for Black Friday, the biggest shopping sale day of the year. On cyber monday you get to view these sales ads and coupons before anyone else. I knew the ads and coupons were posted because I received an email alert. This saved me a whole lot of time and alot of money. I was also able to plan out my shopping and decide which holiday gifts I was buying for who. Due to the savings from using the coupons and knowing where the sales where, I spent less this year than I did last year.

Since then, I visit the site regularly to grab discount coupons for all the stores I know I'll be purchasing from. If you want to save some money, I suggest you remember to look for a coupon to use at checkout. Saving $10 here, $20 there, free shipping...it adds up. Why would I shop at the malls? It takes little time, in the convenience of my home and the product is shipping right to my door!

I recently saved $70 when I purchased a hammock from JC Penneys. The hammock was on sale and then I used a coupon for free shipping. The time saved, the money saved AND I saved my back from hauling the huge box. UPS delivered this right to my door in 3 days. I was so satisfied and happy I shopped online.

Black-Friday.net store list:

AAFES ,AceHardware.com,Amazon.com,Babies R Us,Bass Pro Shops,BestBuy,BJ's,Boscovs,Buckle.com,Buy.com,Circuit City , CompUSA,Costco,CVS,Disney Store,EBgames,Finish Line ,Fred's GameStop,Harbor Freight,hhgregg,Home Depot,Ikea,JC Penney ,JoAnn Fabrics,Jos. A Bank,J&R,KBtoys.com,Kmart,Kohls,Lane Bryant
Linens-N-Things, Macys,Meijer,Menards ,Micro Center ,Newegg.com
Office Depot,OfficeMax,Old Navy,Overstock.com,Pacific Sunwear PepBoys,Radio Shack,Ritz Camera,Sam's Club,Sears,ShopKo
Staples,Target,TigerDirect,Tommy Hilfiger,Toys R Us,Toys R Us Big Toy Book,Tractor Supply Company,Value City,Walmart

Why don't you go to Black-Friday.net now...bookmark the site and 'remember' to use the coupons they offer. Times are getting tough and our budgets may be smaller. Using this site and the coupons they offer will help when you need to purchase an item. And, as the months pass leading into the fall, remember to use the site for the sales on Black Friday. You will be happy you did...

Being Budget Conscious

I think now a days everyone is being more budget conscious with the cost of living on the rise. We are spending more money on food, gas and all our other needs.

In a time where I believe people want to save money where and when they could, one way is how we make our telephone calls.

You can save as much as 80% or more over regular long distance providers like at&t, sprint, etc when using an international phone card .

Phone cards offers a low-cost alternative to other methods of placing telephone calls. These cards allow you to remain within your spending limits. You are also able to use these prepaid phone cards from almost any phone, so you can use your phone card no matter where you are.

When use your regular telephone service, you can end up with a larger-than-expected long distance phone bill at the end of the month, but you cannot go over your budget with a pre-paid phone card.

At PhoneCardsAvenue their rates are so low and they offer so many discounts and services, you might even end up having the card last more than a month and save you even more money! They provide you with the top selling calling cards, now offering a spring break sale, include monthly specials, provide an easy way to purchase your card in three steps, so you can use your card immediately. You can also be guaranteed a secure online purchase.

Many people are switching to phone cards because they realize how much money they can save by using international phone cards instead of a long distance plan.

You don't need to switch your long-distance carrier to receive the competitive benefits of calling cards. Some long-distance phone companies even charge an additional monthly fee in order to receive a competitive rate. Using a prepaid calling card avoids these monthly fees so you only pay for the time you spend talking.

Convert Your Car to Burn Water & Gas ?

Did you know that you can convert your car or truck to a water-burning vehicle (Water Hybrid)?

I came across this interesting article and with the prices of gas these days, who wouldn't want to do this and save a ton of money? Has anyone tried this method? If so, has it worked and was it very complicated?

Converting your car to burn water and gas is a Do-It-Yourself, affordable and simple technology.
Water is supplemental to gasoline or diesel fuel.It is said that you can double fuel economy and many more people said they have doubled or even tripled their mileage.

Too good to be true?

I don't know...it is said to be very simple to install and/or remove.

It's suppose to boost the performance of your vehicle while preventing smog and generate free energy in your car or truck.

You don't change your engine or computer. A quart-size (95O cc) container is placed somewhere under the hood. You fill it with dostilled water and a little bit of baking soda. The device gets vacuum and electricity (12 Volts) from the engine, and produces HHO gas (Hydrogen+Oxygen
The electrical connection is very simple - this company eliminated the need to use relays or any other complications. The device connects to the 12 Volts of your battery via the ignition switch, to prevent hydrogen production when the engine is off. The device is fuse protected and draws very little current, only 1-3 Amps. This could take 10 minutes or less to connect.

Well, if you are interested in converting your car to burn water and gas and save some money, check out it HERE.

Please let me know if you try this and how it works for you.

Passing a Great Find To You

I'm still recuperating from illness, so being home and not being able to go out and shop has left me to do all my shopping online. I have to say it is a great convenience and I have been finding all kinds of great offers and bargains. This might become a habit and I may never go to the mall again!

I've been looking to replace my eye glass frames and also looking for a great pair of sunglasses.I decided on prescription sunglasses to give my eyes a break from wearing contact lenses all the time. I found this company that is offering an unbelievable $ 8 Zenni Optical Rx Eyeglasses . Knowing the prices of a new pair of lenses and frames, I had to look into this further to see if it was true.

What I found is that at http://www.ZenniOptical.com all complete glasses come with Thin and Light 1.57 index lens, Anti Scratch Coating, Full UV Protection, Lens edge polishing and beveling, Quality Hard Eyeglass case, Microfiber Lens Cleaning Cloth and a Full Guarantee. Their inventory consists of rimless, half rim, full rim and variable dimension frames for women, men and even children. Their shipping is a flat $4.95 no matter how many pair of glasses you order.

I learned that ZenniOptical manufactures their own frames, so this is why they are able to sell direct to the customer. With really no overhead or middlemen, they pass on these great savings to their customers.

I thought it would be hard to order lenses online, but I found the ordering process was easy. You chose your lens and there is a very detailed page to help you with the rest of your order. It was a snap and I can't believe I will be now able to get new lenses without spending a few hundred dollars.

Check it out.

Comparison Shopping Saves Money

I recently needed to purchase a birthday gift and as usual, I did my shopping comparison before deciding where exactly to purchase the item. I decided on an electronics product and I searched until I arrived at a price that was to my liking.

I was able to save $79 for the same product other online sites were selling the item for. That is a nice chunk of change!

One comparison site is Digxa (dig for the best price). This site offers comparison shopping on home and garden products, electronics, computers, clothes, kids toys, jewelry and so much more.

Once you find the product you want to find the lowest price for, you click on the item. This will then bring you to a page where you will find all the online store listings. You can sort though these listings by product reviews or price. It will indicate a price range, product reviews and the number of stores selling the item you are interested in.

I suggest when looking to do a little online shopping to do your comparison pricing before you buy the first product you see. If looking for higher priced items such as computers or electronics, you will definitely save money. It is worth the bit of extra time to search for the lowest price.

Refinance Your Auto or Truck Loan and Save Money

I think it's safe to say that we all want to save money each month on our expenses. The cost of living is on the rise, mortgages are resetting and homeowners may find these are causing more money to leave our pockets.

If you have an auto loan, do you know what the interest rate you are paying? I was surprised to learn how many of my friends and associates don't know this.

Did you know you can refinance your auto loan as you could refinance your mortgage? Refinance Car Loans enables you to pay off your existing auto loan, but it is a faster and easier process than refinancing your mortgage.

The new lender will pay off your old loan and the title will get transferred to the new lender. Refinancing a car loan is basically used to lower your interest rate, thus reducing your monthly expenses. Auto loan rates are lower now, so why not take advantage of this?

If you had obtained a loan a year or two ago, maybe the interest rate was high due to poor credit and now you know your credit has improved. This will give you a lower interest rate. You have a couple of choices when considering an auto refinance loan. If you want to reduce the amount you are paying in interest, refinance with the same or reduced term. If your goal is to have smaller monthly payments, you can even chose to extend the payment term on your existing loan. Please note though that this may increase the total interest paid over the life of your loan.

Get The Best Automobile Insurance Policy With the Lowest Rates

My automobile insurance policy is going to expire soon. Before I renew with my present company, I thought now is the time to shop for better car insurance rates. Getting the best insurance quote possible, keeps more money in my pocket.

In the past, it was very time consuming shopping for the best rates. Having to call different companies, giving the representative my information over and over again. This time I am using a new approach. By going to Advantage Auto Quotes, I can have companies compete for my business. Thus, getting the lowest, most affordable auto policy.

I only had to fill out one online quote form and Advantage Auto Quotes will send my information to several companies and contact me with the best rate.

I noticed on the site they offer: individual coverage, GAP and business insurance, poor driver auto insurance rates and coverage for teens and seniors.

Getting a quote for your auto insurance and receiving the lowest rate has never been easier.

Black Friday is Coming...Are you Prepared?

It is hard to believe in just 3 short months, it will be Black Friday. One of the biggest shopping days of the year. I cannot believe I am already thinking about holiday shopping, but I am trying to be more organized this year.

In the weeks preceding Black Friday, I tell myself I WILL get up early and get to the stores before the herds of people arrive. I will get all my holiday shopping done and save money purchasing the special sale items that entice you into the stores.

What happens is...the night before, I ask myself.."are you crazy?" getting up at dawn, driving in the traffic that already is bumper to bumper, only to get stuck on huge lines and fight with others grabbing at the same items.
Not this time!

I can not believe this, but there is a site I found called Black-Friday.net. On this site you can find all the thanksgiving ads and shop for the sale items in your favorite store without leaving the house! You don't have to get up early, fight the traffic or the lines in the stores. When on the site, you can sign up to receive email alerts on the newly posted thanksgiving ads and sale specials. The advantage to this being you see the ads before anyone else does. No waiting for your newspaper to arrive.

I remember going into Best Buy for gifts last year. Those of you who are not familiar with Best Buy,it is the number one specialty store for electronics, computers, TV's and entertainment software. When I arrived at the store, it was so crowded and it was impossible to look at the computer items I wanted to see. The music section was more crowded. I felt bad for the sales representatives; being yelled at, people being very impatient waiting for their turn.

Now that I found Black-Friday.net, I will be organized and prepared. More importantly, I can sleep in and won't have the hassles involved with shopping on this big event day. Not only will I be saving money, but my sanity as well.

Bookmark this site now, so you are prepared and don't forget to register your email for the ad previews.
