Something To Ponder

A friend of mine recently made me aware of something and it did leave me with puzzling thoughts.

This was something to ponder...

Is it just me,or does anyone else find it amazing that during the mad cow epidemic our government could track a single cow, born in Canada almost three years ago, right to the stall where she slept in the state of Washington? And, they tracked her calves to their stalls. But they are unable to locate 11 million illegal aliens wandering around our country. Maybe we should give each of them a cow?

The Only Thing That Is Truly Yours is Your Attitude

I found the below story in my email inbox. I enjoyed it so much, I thought it was worth sharing. It's a great motivator and proves once again that your attitude truly does matter in your life...

Jerry is the manager of a restaurant. He is always in a good mood.

When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would always reply:

'If I were any better, I would be twins!'

Many of the waiters at his restaurant quit their jobs when he changed jobs,

so they could follow him around from restaurant to restaurant

Why?

Because Jerry was a natural motivator.

If an employee was having a bad day, Jerry was always there, telling him how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Jerry and asked him

'I don't get it! No one can be a positive person all of the time.. How do you do it?'

Jerry replied, 'Each morning I wake up and say to myself, I have two choices today. I can choose to be in a good mood or I can choose to be in a bad mood.

I always choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be victim or I can choose to learn from it. I always choose to learn from it.

Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I always choose the positive side of life.'

'But it's not always that easy,' I protested.

'Yes it is,' Jerry said.

'Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk every situation is a choice.

You choose how you react to situations.. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood..

It's your choice how you live your life..'

Several years later, I heard that Jerry accidentally did something you are never supposed to do in the restaurant business.

He left the back door of his restaurant open. And then in the morning, he was robbed by three armed men.

While Jerry trying to open the safe box, his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination. The robbers panicked and shot him.

Luckily, Jerry was found quickly and rushed to the hospital.

After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was released from the hospital with fragments of the bullets still in his body..

I saw Jerry about six months after the accident.

When I asked him how he was, he replied, 'If I were any better, I'd be twins. Want to see my scars?'

I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place.

'The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door,' Jerry replied.

'Then, after they shot me, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or could choose to die. I chose to live.'
'Weren't you scared' I asked?

Jerry continued, 'The paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine.

But when they wheeled me into the Emergency Room and I saw the expression on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared.

In their eyes, I read 'He's a dead man..

I knew I needed to take action.'
'What did you do?' I asked.

'Well, there was a big nurse shouting questions at me,' said Jerry. 'She asked if I was allergic to anything.'

'Yes,' to bullets, I replied.

Over their laughter, I told them: 'I am choosing to live. Please operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.'

'Jerry lived thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude.

I learned from him that every day you have the choice to either enjoy your life or to hate it.

The only thing that is truly yours - that no one can control or take from you
is your attitude, so if you can take care of that, everything else in life becomes much easier.

Can Your Favorite Color Predict Your Perfect Job?

According to Careerbuilder.com, your favorite colors and which colors you prefer most to least, can help you figure out which career is best for you. Your color choices can reveal how you approach work, handle tasks and what types of workplaces is right for you.

First you pick the color you prefer most...red, yellow or blue. Then you choose the colors you prefer second...green, purple or orange and then achromatic colors...black, white or brown.

Your preferred color choice determines your talents and how you go about tasks. This color choice can also indicate what you overdo.

Here are some examples of what certain choices may reveal:

If you prefer: yellow, purple and white: You're the communicator.
Careers in corporate communications, marketing or religious occupations work best.

If you prefer: red, green and black: You're the investor.
Careers in finance, accounting, banking, manufacturing, property management, production analysis, investment, money management, consulting, product sales or teaching.

Household Tips to Make Your Life Easier

Hallmark has a new movie coming out called Dear Prudence. Jane Seymour stars as a talk show host who gives out household advice.

Below are some tips from the movie about using everyday household products to make your life a bit easier.

Windshield Wiper Frost Free Fluid: When you have to leave your car outside overnight in the winter, mix 3 parts vinegar to 1 part water and coat the windows with this solution. This vinegar and water combination will keep windshields ice and frost-free.

To keep cut flowers fresher longer by mixing up a homemade formula. Mix 1 pint warm water, 1 pint lemonade or a lemon-lime soft drink. Pour enough into the vase to cover the lower three to four inches of the stem. Here's how this formula works: the sugar in the mixture supplies energy to the flowers and the citric acid in the lemon helps preserve them.

To keep buttons from dropping off: Dab a drop of clear nail polish onto the thread the secures the buttons. This will harden and make it more difficult for thread to break off.

To help new or just cleaned drapes stay fresh and crisp looking, spray them with a few coats of unscented hair spay before hanging them up. Allow the hair spray to dry between applications.

To speed drying time of big bulky items and jeans, add a dry towel to the wet items you're placing in the dryer. The towel will help absorb some of the excess moisture.

When you need to touch up a scratch or other type of blemish on a painted wall use a drop of paint on a cotton swab to fix the problem. You won't waste a bunch of paint and you won't have to waste time cleaning a paintbrush.

Instead of throwing away a sponge that has a stale odor, simply toss it in the dishwasher and wash it with the next load of dishes. It will come out clean and fresh smelling and will kill any bacteria in the sponge, so it's a good idea to toss your sponges into the dishwasher often.

For sharper scissors simply take your dull scissors and cut through three layers of tin foil ten times. Cut some paper to test. Repeat if not sharp enough for you. Or...cut a sheet of medium-grade sand paper into small pieces!

Make giant ice cubes in muffin tins or plastic margarine bowls. These are perfect for using in picnic coolers or punch bowls. They look pretty and keep your drinks or food cold longer.

Get rid of tarnish on silver the easy way, place a piece of aluminum foil (shiny side up) on the bottom of a glass bowl or pan. Fill the container with a solution made of 2 cups boiling water and 3 teaspoons of baking soda, and you've made an inexpensive "bath" to soak your silver in. Your silver will shine like new in no time!

To keep lint and dust off glass top tables, wash them in a solution of warm water and fabric softener. Add one tablespoon of liquid fabric softener to one quart of warm water. The fabric softener will clean the glass inexpensively and will help keep lint from gathering on the glass. Also great for computer screens and TVs.

Make Children Play Outdoors

When I was a child, we didn’t have computers, video games or hand held devices to play with. We were always outside playing. Kick ball, hide and seek, tag, climbing trees, walking in the park, baseball, riding our bikes and any other game we thought of.

It seems the children of today do not know how to ‘play’ outside. They are too busy watching TV, playing video games or being on the computer. Never mind those who are dropped off at the mall to hang out doing nothing.

Lack of physical activity and eating fast foods is causing our children to be overweight. I brought my niece to the county fair last week and I was truly amazed at how many children I saw who were overweight. The ratio to the children I noticed who were of average weight was surprising. I don’t remember seeing my peers as a kid with excess pounds. Thinking back to your youth, do you remember any of your friends being overweight? It’s bothersome to me because I think parents are not getting involved with outside play with their children.

It’s never too late to help your kids get back in shape. Instead of sedentary games, being on the computer and watching tv or texting on the cell phone, introduce your kids to outside play. Maybe teach them the games you played as a kid. Have an old fashioned game of wiffle ball or kick ball. Sure they might roll their eyes, but you never know…they may end up enjoying it. The quality family time is a plus.

Some Ideas for Family Play Time:
Play tag or touch football
Have a family relay race
Fly a kite
Roller blade or roller skate
Ride bikes
Go swimming
Toss around a frisbee

Did you know according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the last 30 years the percentage of overweight children has increased?

Ages 2 to 5 yrs - increased from 5.0% to 13.9%
Ages 6 to 11 yrs - increased from 6.5% to 18.8%
Ages 12 to 19 yrs - incrased from 5.0% to 17.4%

Start your family on the road to healthier living by being more active...include outdoor play.

Helpful Flying Tips

You may be planning a trip that requires you to fly. If your destination requires a lengthy flight, you want to make sure you are comfortable. Planning ahead can prevent health problems. Your trip should be enjoyable and fun filled. You certainly don’t want your flight to put a damper on your vacation, nor slow you down.

Some suggestions when flying:

To relieve stress from ear pressure, chew gum. You can also swallow or yawn. Using ear plugs will also regulate ear pressure. If you are traveling with an infant, use a pacifier or give them a bottle during take offs and landings.

If you have allergies or upper respiratory congestion, take an antihistamine or a decongestant spray prior to flying. This will help with ear pressure pain.

If you had dental work, try to avoid flying for 12 hours after having the work done. The change in cabin pressure can be painful.

Avoid eating junk foods high in sugar and caffeinated drinks. They can cause a temporary surge in energy and then followed by a lull

Drink fluids: water or natural juices to keep you hydrated and prevent deep vein thrombosis

Exercise your feet while sitting. Flexing your feet and moving them in a circular direction will exercise your calf muscles. Leave room under the seat in front of you so you can stretch your legs or walk in the aisle for circulation.

Reduce motion sickness by sitting at a window seat near the plane’s wings. That will reduce the motion you feel. It’s also a good idea to open the air vent and avoid reading.

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes to help prevent discomfit and swollen feet.

Another Helpful Tip:

In Case of an Emergency, you should also have on hand your medical history, which would include: your blood type, any pre-existing conditions, list of allergies and any medications you are currently taking. Have emergency contact numbers available.

Laws & Penalties / Driving Under the Influence

Since I live in the State of New Jersey, I thought I would post the current laws and penalties when driving under the influence of alcohol. The law has changed and I myself didn’t realize the percentage was lowered when considered guilty for drunk driving or while under the influence.

If a person is operating a motor vehicle with a Blood Alcohol Concentration of 0.08 percent or greater, you will be found guilty of drunk driving. Although the law states 0.08%, you could actually be found guilty of driving under the influence even when your percentage is below the 0.08.

1st Offense
If the person’s blood alcohol concentration is 0.08 or higher, but less than 0.10 percent, or if the person operates a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicating liquor, or if the person permits another person who is under the influence or has a blood alcohol concentration over 0.08, but less than 0.10 percent, the penalties are:

* A fine of $250 - $400
* Possible imprisonment for up to 30 days
* 3 month license suspension
* A minimum of 6 hrs a day for 2 consecutive days in an Intoxicated Driver Resource Center
* Automobile surcharge of $1,000 a year for 3 year

If the person’s blood alcohol concentration is above 0.10 percent:
·Fine of $300-$500
·Possible imprisonment for up to 30 days
·License suspension between 7 months and 1 year
·Six hrs. a day for 2 days in an Intoxicated Driver Resource Center
·Auto surcharge of $1,000 per year for 3 years

2nd Offense
Fine $500-$1000
Imprisonment of at least 48 consecutive hrs and up to 90 days
2 year license suspension
Auto insurance surcharge of $1,000 a year for 3 years
30 days community service

3rd Offense
Fine of $1,000
Imprisonment of 180 days
10 year license suspension
Auto insurance surcharge of $1,500 a year for 3 years

> Any offense can also include you having to deposit $100 into a drunk driving enforcement fund.
> Motor Vehicle restoration fee of $100 and an Intoxicated Driving Program fee of $100
> A violent Crimes Compensation Fund Fee of $50
> A safe and secure community program fee of $75
> $100 surcharge ($50 to the state and $50 to municipality in which you were convicted)

In addition to all the penalties and fees listed, a judge may also order that the installation of an Ignition Interlock Device be installed or revoke your vehicle’s registration. The Ignition Interlock Device measures the person’s blood alcohol level.

Did you know that if you refuse a breath test, you could have your license suspended up to one year and be fined $250-$500? And that’s only for the first offense.

A Drink is a Drink:
Beer: 12oz = 4.5% alcohol = .54 oz amount alcohol
Wine: 5oz = 11% alcohol = .55 oz amount alcohol
Alcohol: 1 1/3 = 40% alcohol = ..53 oz amount of alcohol

Music Memories

My cousin had an unique baby shower. Her and her husband not only invited friends and relatives, but spouses, significant others and children. It was a beautiful day and they turned this baby shower into a pool and barbecue party.

It really was a good time and I thought it was a great idea. As the hours passed, the music turned a bit nostalgic. We're an Italian family and out of the stereo speakers were old Italian songs blasting. Some made famous by ole blues eyes, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. As the songs played, we all had a 'moment'. One by one you can see the look of recognition as a song came on that brought back a memory. I was even saying...I remember when...
My parents, aunts and uncles always had these songs playing.

Before you knew it, we were all laughing and singing and dancing to the tunes. I asked my cousin which CD was playing because my Mom and I particularly liked the Dean Martin songs. She told me is was Martin Sands, which is a live performance, known to be an historic event at the Sands. Let me explain that this CD was not just music, it was comedy. Dean Martin's jokes and comments had us all hysterical. His style was unique and there will never be another entertainer like him.

Has music ever brought you to think of a childhood memory?

If you like the old songs made famous by Dean Martin, you really should check this one out. It made us laugh and it just has that light, feel good feeling. It's always nice to walk down memory lane...
