Need a Brain Boost?

When you're feeling the pressure to be 'smart'...helping the kids with their homework, doing your taxes or other countless tasks that require brain power, these foods may help boost your brain 'smarts'.

The below foods also help slow cognitive decline, improve your memory and protect your mental sharpness.

Eating blueberries, which are high in antioxidants, help protect the brain from free radical damage. Blueberries also improve cognitive processing. If you can find 'wild' blueberries, they have even more brain boosting antioxidants than our civilized variety.

A fresh brewed coffee is the ultimate brain fuel. The caffeine has been said to show that it retards the aging process and enhances short term memory performance. In a British study, researchers have found that people consuming the caffeine equaling one cup of coffee experience improved attention and problem solving skills.

Salmon or mackerel contains omega 3 fatty acids that are one of the primary building blocks of brain tissue. Salmon is also rich in niacin, which wards off Alzheimer's disease and slows the rate of cognitive decline.

Keep away from sugary foods, which causes surges in glucose. In the long term, the highs and lows can lead to lack of concentration. Also stay away from foods high in saturated fat. This fat can clog blood vessels and prevent the flow of nutrients and blood to the brain.

Feeling A Bit Droopy?

The holidays have a way of making us feel tired. From all the running and rushing around, planning, cooking, visiting etc...

Here are a couple of tips that can help:

1. Drink Green Tea. Tea is one of the most popular beverages in the world. It is considered to be a nevous system stimulant due to the caffeine enhancing our mental and physical performance. Green Tea only has 30 mg of caffeine per cup, which is less than coffee at 100-150 mg per cup and black tea at 40-60 mg per cup. This enables people who are sensistive to caffeine to tolerate green tea.

Tea also contains L-theanine, an amino acid that signals the brain to increase alertness, but also at the same time, leaves you with a feeling of tranquility.

Drinking Green Tea also has additional health benefits by providing antioxidants that protect you from heart disease, cancer, helps to burn fat and diabetes.

2. For Brain Power, try Eleuthero. This is not a true form of ginsing, but this herb is believed to enhance mental and physcial performance and improve the body's resisitance to environmental stresses. Researchers have shown that eleuthero may be more effective than Gingko Biloba for improving cognitive function in middle age.

3. To beat Stress: Ginseng Root. The compounds in ginseng root called ginsenosides, appear to moderate stress related hormones. Ginsend preserves and improves energey levels.

When you are feeling fatigued, try to maximize eating fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds and minimize your intake of fat in meat/ dairy products and fried foods.
Remember to exercise, eat smaller meals to maintain blood sugar levels and use stress reduction and relaxation methods such as: yoga, tai chi or meditation.

Laughter Is The Best Medicine

Have you ever heard that saying...Laughter is the best medicine? I have heard people say that on many, many occasions. Did you know that laughter really does do a body good? There is truth in that saying...

Research studies have shown that laughing can actually stimulate a positive, physcial change in your body. Although having a good laugh can't 'cure' everything, but it certainly can help you deal with stress.

Negative thoughts can cause a chemical reaction in your brain that can increase stress and decrease your immunity. When you keep positive with positive thoughts and include laughter, your body releases chemicals that help fight stress.

Laughter also helps your body produce natural painkillers.

Have you ever used laughter or humor in a tough situation? Laughter can help you make 'light' of a situation, giving you an emotional release.

Make laughter a part of your day. Read a joke book, watch a funny tv show or movie, play a silly game with your kids or go to a comedy club for your dose of laughter.

Do your body some good...and laugh!

Make Children Play Outdoors

When I was a child, we didn’t have computers, video games or hand held devices to play with. We were always outside playing. Kick ball, hide and seek, tag, climbing trees, walking in the park, baseball, riding our bikes and any other game we thought of.

It seems the children of today do not know how to ‘play’ outside. They are too busy watching TV, playing video games or being on the computer. Never mind those who are dropped off at the mall to hang out doing nothing.

Lack of physical activity and eating fast foods is causing our children to be overweight. I brought my niece to the county fair last week and I was truly amazed at how many children I saw who were overweight. The ratio to the children I noticed who were of average weight was surprising. I don’t remember seeing my peers as a kid with excess pounds. Thinking back to your youth, do you remember any of your friends being overweight? It’s bothersome to me because I think parents are not getting involved with outside play with their children.

It’s never too late to help your kids get back in shape. Instead of sedentary games, being on the computer and watching tv or texting on the cell phone, introduce your kids to outside play. Maybe teach them the games you played as a kid. Have an old fashioned game of wiffle ball or kick ball. Sure they might roll their eyes, but you never know…they may end up enjoying it. The quality family time is a plus.

Some Ideas for Family Play Time:
Play tag or touch football
Have a family relay race
Fly a kite
Roller blade or roller skate
Ride bikes
Go swimming
Toss around a frisbee

Did you know according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the last 30 years the percentage of overweight children has increased?

Ages 2 to 5 yrs - increased from 5.0% to 13.9%
Ages 6 to 11 yrs - increased from 6.5% to 18.8%
Ages 12 to 19 yrs - incrased from 5.0% to 17.4%

Start your family on the road to healthier living by being more active...include outdoor play.

The Benefits of the Acai Berry

If you are not familiar with the acai berry, it is known to increase energy, stamina, vitality and promote overall well being. It also is high in antioxidants and helps fight premature aging.
It contains fatty acids and omegas, which helps lowers harmful cholesterol and sterols that helps in the reduction of blood plasma cholesterol. The acai berry is also an excellant source of dietary fiber.

I had posted a three part series about the acai berry and it's benefits on my blog: Mind,Body & Soul back in March.

The Benefits of the Acai Berry-Part 1
26 Reasons to Drink Acai Berry Juice-Part 2
26 Reasons to Drink Acai Berry Juice-Part 3

The acai berry grows on palm trees in the amazon rain forest. They are considered to be the most nutritious and edible berry on the planet. The berries are dark purple and about the size of a blueberry with a thin layer of edible pulp surrounding a large seed.

I found that at the Total Health Shop, they provide not only the best price, but their unique blend of juice provides the best benefits. In their acai berry juice, you will also find additional ingredients.

Interesting Facts About Coke

The next time you open a can or bottle of Coke to drink, you may want to read the below facts before actually drinking it. With the exception of #7, the following facts are alittle disturbing, don't you think? I am not a soda drinker at all, but for those who make soda their everyday choice of drink, what is it doing to your body? Very interesting...

#1 In many states the highway patrol carries
two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from
the highway after a car accident.

#2. You can put a T-bone steak in a b owl of Coke
and it will be gone in two days.

#3 To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the
toilet bowl and let the 'real thing' sit for one hour,
then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes
stains from vitreous china.

#4 To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers:
Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds
Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

#5 To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour
a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

#6 To loosen a rusted bolt: Apply a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola
to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

#7 To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into
the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake.
Thirty minutes before ham is finished, remove the foil,
allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous
brown gravy.

#8 To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of Coke
into the load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run
through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen
grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your
windshield.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:

#1 The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid.
It will dissolve a nail in about four days. Phosphoric
acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major
contributor to the rising increase of osteoporosis.

#2 To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the
commercial trucks must use a hazardous material place
card reserved for highly corrosive materials.

#3 The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean
engines of the trucks for about 20 years!

Beware If You Have Mold Allergies

If you know you have mold allergies, Throw away outdated pancake mix and other box mixes that you might have in your home.

Below is a letter to Dear Abby regarding this subject:

I recently made a batch of pancakes for my healthy 14-year-old son, using a mix that was in our pantry. He said that they tasted 'funny,' but ate them anyway. About 10 minutes later, he began having difficulty breathing and his lips began turning purple. I gave him his allergy pill, had him sit on the sofa and told him to relax. He was wheezing while inhaling and exhaling.

My husband, a volunteer Firefighter and EMT, heated up some water, and we had my son lean over the water so the steam could clear his chest and sinuses. Soon, his breathing became more regular and his lips returned to a more normal color. We checked the date on the box of pancake mix and, to my dismay, found it was very outdated As a reference librarian at an academic institution, I have the ability to search through many research databases. I did just that, and found an article the next day that mentioned a 19-year-old male DYING after eating pancakes made with outdated mix. Apparently, the mold that forms in old pancake mix can be toxic!

When we told our friends about my son's close call, we were surprised at the number of people who mentioned that they should check their own pancake mix since they don't use it often, or they had purchased it some time ago. With so many people shopping at warehouse-type stores and buying large sizes of pancake mix, I hope your readers will take the time to check the expiration date on their boxes.

***

According to Snopes the 19 yr old mentioned in the above letter, passed away from anaphylaxis due to an allergic reaction to mold. Anaphylaxis is a immunologic reaction that occurs when someone that has allergies comes in contact with a substance they are allergic to. It causes fatal respiratory or cardiac arrest.

Box mixes that are sold in cardboard boxes, paper sacks or unpouched are likely to be at risk to form mold. If you know you have mold allergies, check the expiration date on all box mixes. Throw them out if they have expired! Your life is worth more than a $1.50 box mix.

Get Healthy With Vend Natural

Vend Natural is an organic vending machine company concerned about a healthy lifestyle and healthy eating habits. They created a vending machine business that offers healthy choices as an alternative to junk food filled vending machines.

It seems more and more people I come in contact with have intestinal issues. What we are eating is surely contributing to these problems. I am more aware of what I am eating and snacking on and the ingredients that go into each product. Looking into the ingredients of the natural healthy snacks and beverages in these vending machines, I was quite impressed. On their site, they include their products and nutritional facts. Gluten and lactose free, all organic and natural with the necessary fiber and vitamins, less sugar and sodium ...all providing a healthy, nutritional snack.

I also read on their site that schools have now started to implement these machines for the children. I think that is an absolute great idea because the children today do not eat properly. They snack on junk and soda. Having these machines in the school offering a natural healthy snack will also teach them to eat better and make better choices. With obesity reaching an all time high in children, these healthy snacks will help with their calorie intake as well and provide essential vitamins.

If you are looking for a business opportunity and interested in nutrition, Vend Natural is a company to look into. They will provide you with top notch equipment, support and training. Vend Natural wants you to be successful.

If you would like to bring these organic vending machines to your place of employment, school or organization, just visit their site and they will provide you with all the necessary information you need.

10 Ways You Can Manage Stress

I do not believe anyone can honestly say that stress hasn't affected your life from time to time. Some people are chronic stressers...Stress can affect our life deeply and that includes are health as well.

Here are some tips from Ediets that can help manage your stress

1. Be clear on what you want and stay committed when going for it. Don't get sideswiped by all the little things that come up. Prioritize what must be done -- then do them one at a time. Set boundaries and say NO to those things that are not truly important to you right now.

2. Ask for help! You don't need to do it alone! Sometimes you may need more support than a friend can provide. There are professionals out there and lots of self-help resources. You don't need to be a Lone Ranger -- even he had Tonto!

3. Deal with what is within your control. If it's outside your control, don't worry about it. Look at what is within your control and decide what you can do to create positive change. Be realistic in what you can do: rather than picking 10 things to work on, pick one or two. Give yourself small steps to take to effect change, and celebrate the changes you make!

4. Take care of you! A bubble bath, a 10-minute walk on your coffee break, a massage -- you are your greatest asset. Ensure you are taking care of yourself. Exercise, eat right, hydrate and get your sleep! How we treat our body, mind and spirit affects our emotions, behaviors, actions and results. Take good care of you.

5. Keep a journal. Write whatever you choose and however you want. Just write! Write whatever is on your mind, what your successes are for the day and finish off by writing at least five things that you are grateful for that day.

6. Breathe! When we are stressed, our breath is shallow and we don't get enough oxygen. So take a breath break whenever you think of it and take some deep belly breaths. Concentrate on your breathing. Better yet, take a mini-vacation -- visualize you're on the beach in Maui or somewhere else that calms you while you're on your breath break!

7. Relax! Find a relaxation technique and use it! Listen to some great music or a relaxation or meditation CD. Meditate. Go for a walk. It may seem strange at first, but keep at it!

8. Let go of expectations! It's when our expectations and reality don't match that we get into that really stressed state!

9. Act rather than react! Start recognizing your thoughts. When you start to get upset, stop! Breathe! Ask yourself whether you want to go down that road. Will it get you the desired result you want? If not, change directions.

10. Be compassionate with yourself -- treat yourself as your own best friend! Don't get down on yourself for what you aren't doing, acknowledge yourself for what you are doing and celebrate your successes.

Human Errors DO Happen in the Hospital

I am very concerned about human error when in the hospital. During my recent stay in the hospital, a few potential errors might have occurred if I wasn't alert and on top of my care. I made sure I was aware and knew about all the medications I was to receive.

May I suggest that if you find yourself in the hospital or a loved one, make sure you get very involved in their care. You can not leave your life totally in the hands of others. You need to look after yourself.

I wrote a more in depth post on my other blog...A Circle of Women ~ Human Error While in the Hospital and included some Important Tips that you should be aware of.

Please read for your safety and for your loved ones.

Drugs in Our Water?

I do not regularly read the newspaper, but today someone left a copy sitting in front of me. A headline caught my eye, so I had to read the story. The headline read…’Drugs in water danger viewed as minimal’…what? Drugs in our water?

The article went on to say that the effect of prescription drugs in our drinking water is not known, but it is not likely a threat. Well, if the effects are not known, how and who says it is not threat? It continued with stating for the majority of people it is probably not a threat, but elderly and pregnant women could be more sensitive. The Environmental and Occupational Health Science Institute at Rutgers University needs to determine whether or not there are areas where the concentrations of prescription drugs in the water are higher than just trace amounts.

A five month study was conducted and it showed that trace amounts of prescription drugs were in the drinking water. Approximately 41 million Americans are affected. The study’s report was released on March 10 and said the drugs detected were antibiotics, pain medications and heart treatments among others.

In northern New Jersey, trace amounts of metabolized angina medicine and the mood stabilizer carbamazepine were detected in the drinking water. In Philadelphia, 56 pharmaceuticals and byproducts were found in the city’s drinking water.

Prescription drugs are said to get into the water by people dumping unused drugs down the drain and medicine not completely metabolized and leaving through the human body waste. Also if a water supply uses surface runoff as a source can also contain trace prescription drugs. Chemical treatments are not able to remove all the prescription drug traces.

So…is our water even remotely safe to drink? What were your thoughts after reading this post?

Makes me feel uncomfortable knowing our water might not be as safe as I thought

Set The Mood With Oysters

A topic that came up during some girl chatter were foods that are considered an aphrodisiac.

Oysters was on the top of the list. It's said that oysters enhance your mood, therefore creating passion. Why? I know oysters are good for your heart, so I guess anything that's good for your heart should help the rest of your body, right?

Since the Aphrodite tale stating she was born and emerged from the sea, this sexy shellfish has been thought about as an aphrodisiac.

Oysters are loaded with vitamins, Omega3's and contain testosterone-boosting zinc.

My first experience with oysters was while down at the beach, my friend was drinking a cocktail containing raw oysters, then for lunch oysters again. Hmmm, setting the mood for romance later in the evening?

Most people chose to eat Gulf oysters raw, but might be leery thinking they were not shipped or refrigerated properly. There's even a myth that oysters shouldn't be eaten during the warmer months and only eaten during the months that contain 'r's in them.

But today, processing has advanced and with technology such as the Post Harvest process, even at risk consumers can enjoy raw oysters. There are three post harvest treatments: individual quick freezing, low heat pasteurization or heat cool pasteurization or high hydrostatic pressure. With these new processes, at risk consumers can now enjoy with reduced risk of Vibrio vulnificus illness

So...go ahead...set the mood....dim the lights, eat your oyster stir fry and let the effects take over. Enjoy!

Oyster Stir Fry
Yields 4 servings

1 tablespoon cornstarch
1-1/2 tablespoons oil
1 clove garlic, minced
2 tablespoons green onion, chopped
1 tablespoon fresh ginger, peeled and minced
3/4 pound oysters, shucked and drained
1/4 cup orange juice
2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
Mix cornstarch with one tablespoon of water in a small bowl and set aside. Heat oil in wok or skillet. Add garlic, onion and ginger; stir-fry for approximately one minute. Add oysters, orange juice and soy sauce; stir fry for an additional 30 seconds. Add cornstarch mixture and cook until sauce just starts to thicken, about 1 minute more. Serve immediately with rice.

Do You Suffer from Sleep Deprivation and/or Insomnia?

Sleep deprivation is a lack of the necessary amount of sleep your body needs. Sleep deprivation can affect the brain function and it also affects reactions to stress, regulates body functions such as digestion, the immune system, mood, sex, or energy usage, while suppressing growth hormones.

Insomnia is considered a sleeping disorder which a person has difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.

Industry guru Bradley Thompson found the secret that was initially discovered in 1839by a German research scientist which can cure these two conditions.

Binaural beats...What is this?
Binaural beats may influence the brain in subtle ways and can be used to produce relaxation and other health benefits.

Binaural beat recordings are sounds that alter your brainwaves. Binaural beat CDs are now available so you can quickly and easily enter states of creativity, relaxation, or pure energy. Visit http://www.sleep-deprivation-cd.com/ if you experience sleep deprivation or need insomnia help.

Think of the benefits from binaural beat recordings! If you ever experienced sleepless nights, you know the tossing and turning, the headache, staring at the clock hour after hour and then when you are able to finally get an hour or two of sleep... you have to get up for work. And that throws off the entire day, feeling tired and miserable.

Bradley Thompson is now offering a risk free offer to help you get the sleep you deserve and what your body needs. Visit his site to learn more

Food Magnetism is the Healthy Way

We're only into 5 days of the New Year and I can't tell you how many people told me their resolutions included some form of diet plan

Let's face it, diet pills and starving yourself will not help you lose weight and keep it off. It will not tone your body. You might shed a few pounds, but it is not the healthy way to go.

I have been reading about this new diet plan. Before sharing this, I wanted to be more knowledgeable, so I subscribed (for free) to the mini weight loss program. It's more than a plan. It involves reconditioning your mind and that's what I like about it. You need to change the way you think to be successful. This plan includes how to control your thoughts, overcome cravings, how using meditation and yoga can be just as effective as exercise to fight fat. If you allow stress in your life, one of the side effects can be to actually gain weight.Did you know that? This plan teaches you how to relieve stress, how drinking water is essential, the concepts of food magnetism and many other lessons.

Of course we all know that you can increase your metabolism by getting more active, but if you don't use all the elements to balance your body, I'm afraid your plan may not work creating disappointment. What happens next? You stop and lose interest. You're right back where you started.

Before you try any gimmicks, pop too many pills or pay a lot of money to join a gym, read up on this and get your free mini diet course delivered to your email inbox. What do you have to lose? besides the weight that is....

Who Would of Thought?

My friend has family in Iowa. Her brothers' son (her nephew) was born with a heart defect, which makes his health critical on a daily basis. The little one must be monitored 24 hours a day. This condition causes other side effects, but makes his heart stop for no apparent reason.

The parents living in the middle of no where were concerned that if the baby's heart stopped, how would they get to the hospital in time for the medical care immediately needed. Of course the parents were trained in CPR and other procedures necessary to respond to this situation, but his life depends on medically trained doctors at the hospital.

They were introduced to an air ambulance service which would be immediately available to them if the situation was necessary.

Who would of thought airambulance.net was available on the Internet to provide resources to people needing emergency air transportation 24/7 to the hospital throughout the United States?

AirAmbulance.net are specialists in medical flight. They provide trained Flight nurses, Paramedics and medical equipment on board this chartered flight.

This has been a godsend to my friends family. They now feel more secure knowing that a potentially life threatening situation can be attended to quickly. This has calmed their fears and they have confidence knowing this service is reliable, has been in existence for 21 years and will provide quality care if needed.

I wanted to bring this to the attention of others who may be in the same situation as my friends family or in the future may find themselves needing an air ambulance.

The Mind Body Connection

It is fact that what people think and believe can affect their health. Research shows that keeping the body in a calm state is crucial to well-being and optimal health.

Relaxation and stress management techniques will help you reach a calm state to achieve physical and mental health. Relaxation decreases wear and tear on your body and also helps self-control to handle stressful situations at work and home.

My father introduced me to self-hypnosis for relaxation a very long time ago. He always told me that the influence of the mind on the body can be used in a positive way to improve the way a person feels (mentally or physically). Self-hypnosis methods can be used in many areas. Reduce feelings of anxiety or stress, fears, phobias, manage pain, weight loss, quit smoking, self improvement and any other area you feel you need help in. Hypnosis uses affirmations which are positive statements that we make ourselves counter stress and unpleasant thoughts.

Hypnotizing yourself requires only that you have a private quiet area and a place to sit or lay down. You relax yourself as completely as possible, but not falling asleep. You then can deepen your relaxation, usually by counting down from 100 or by thinking of yourself slowly sinking downwards. When you are very relaxed, you can think about a relaxing image, or an image of yourself as successful and happy and not worried.Once you reach this state of relaxation, you can repeat your affirmations.

An alternative to using self-hypnosis is to listen to hypnosis downloads. The benefit of these is that you can listen to them and relax when you are too tired to want to hypnotize yourself.
A good source of these is http://www.instant-hypnosis.com

This site offers over 300 available sessions for immediately access. Some topics include: self improvement, body image, business success, phobias, overcoming illness, spiritual, women's health, addictions, love, mental health and so many more.

You can learn how to focus from the outside to inside, control stressful emotions and anxiety, increase energy and awareness, harmonize your nervous system, keep you attention in a safe place and center your mind and quiet the 'mental' chatter.
